    Insider's Guide

Your Wedding in Saint-Martin: A Guide to the French Caribbean

Saint-Martin occupies a unique position in the Caribbean — and in the world. It is the smallest landmass shared by two nations: the French Republic to the north (Saint-Martin) and the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the south (Sint Maarten). This dual identity, maintained peacefully for over 370 years, gives the island a cultural richness unmatched in the region. On the French side, the rhythm is European: long lunches, excellent wine, topless beaches, the French language, the euro. On the Dutch side, the energy is Caribbean-cosmopolitan: casinos, duty-free shopping, a cruise port, the guilder (pegged to the dollar), and English as the lingua franca. But the border is invisible — you cross it without noticing, and the island functions as one. Saint-Martin’s beaches — particularly Baie Longue, the longest and most beautiful — rank among the finest in the Caribbean. Its restaurant scene, centered on the village of Grand Case (often called the gastronomic capital of the Caribbean), is extraordinary. And its location in the Leeward Islands, with Anguilla visible ten minutes away by boat and St. Barths twenty-five, places it at the heart of the Caribbean’s most glamorous archipelago. A Saint-Martin wedding is a celebration of the island’s unique synthesis: French sophistication meets Caribbean warmth, European gastronomy meets tropical produce, two cultures intertwined under the Caribbean sun.

    1

The Saint-Martin Calendar: Caribbean Seasons & Island Rhythm

Saint-Martin’s wedding season spans year-round, with two distinct periods. The high season (December to April) offers the most reliable weather: temperatures of 24-28°C, low humidity, steady trade winds, and minimal rainfall. This is the busiest and most expensive period, with Christmas, New Year, Carnival (February/March), and the Heineken Regatta (March) bringing peak visitor numbers and energy. The low season (May to November) brings higher temperatures (28-32°C), more humidity, and the possibility of afternoon showers — typically brief and refreshing. This is also the official hurricane season (June-November), though Saint-Martin’s location in the Leeward Islands means direct hits are relatively rare. September and October are the quietest months, with some restaurants and hotels closing for annual maintenance. May, June, and November are the transitional sweet spots: good weather, lower prices, and fewer crowds. The island's dual nationality means two sets of public holidays (French and Dutch), which can affect vendor availability and should be checked when planning.

    2

The Saint-Martin Venues: Colonial Elegance & Caribbean Views

Saint-Martin's wedding venues concentrate on the French side, particularly around the Terres Basses (Lowlands) peninsula. La Samanna, a Belmond hotel on Baie Longue, is the island’s most iconic venue — a white Mediterranean-style palace set on 55 acres of gardens above the most beautiful beach in the Caribbean. Its terraces, with views stretching to Anguilla and the sunset, provide one of the region’s most spectacular ceremony and reception settings. Hotel L'Esplanade, on the hill above Grand Case, offers a more intimate, boutique experience with breathtaking views over the village and the sea. Private villas in Terres Basses and along the coast represent the ultimate in Saint-Martin luxury: sprawling estates with infinity pools, private beach access, and complete privacy. Grand Case itself, with its line of beachfront restaurants (the lolos — casual barbecue shacks — at one end, fine dining at the other), offers a uniquely charming setting for rehearsal dinners and welcome parties. On the Dutch side, the options are more resort-oriented, with larger hotels and casinos providing a different energy. For couples who want true island hopping, Anguilla (10 minutes by boat) and St. Barths (25 minutes by ferry or 15 by plane) offer additional venue options for multi-destination celebrations.

    3

The Saint-Martin Table: French Gastronomy in the Caribbean

Saint-Martin’s culinary reputation is built on its unique position as a French territory in the Caribbean. The village of Grand Case, a single street along the beach, has the highest concentration of excellent restaurants per capita in the Caribbean — earning it the nickname 'the gastronomic capital of the Caribbean.' French-trained chefs work with Caribbean produce to create a cuisine that is both sophisticated and rooted in place: lobster from the waters around Anguilla, snapper landed that morning, tropical fruits at perfect ripeness, herbs and vegetables grown on the island. Wedding menus can range from formal French gastronomy to a more casual but equally exquisite Caribbean-French fusion: accras de morue (salt cod fritters) and boudin créole as canapés, followed by grilled lobster with vanilla beurre blanc or whole roasted snapper with tropical salsa. The desserts showcase the island's tropical abundance: coconut, mango, passion fruit, and the excellent chocolate from the French Caribbean. The wine lists on the French side are, naturally, exceptional — among the best in the Caribbean. A Saint-Martin wedding feast is a celebration of French culinary tradition reimagined through the lens of the Caribbean, served with the warmth and generosity that define island hospitality.

    4

    The Saint-Martin Multi-Day Celebration

Saint-Martin’s compact size (just 87 square kilometers) makes it perfect for a multi-day celebration where everything is close but never feels crowded. A classic structure: Day 1 — welcome dinner at a lolo in Grand Case: grilled lobster on the beach, plastic chairs, cold rosé, the sound of the sea — the most authentic Saint-Martin experience. Day 2 — the wedding day: late afternoon ceremony on the lawn at La Samanna or a private villa, cocktail hour with close-up magic as the sun sets behind Anguilla, dinner under the stars with the Caribbean breeze. Day 3 — recovery: a catamaran day trip to Anguilla (Shoal Bay, one of the Caribbean’s most beautiful beaches, is 30 minutes away) or a day on Pinel Island, a tiny islet in the marine park with crystal-clear water. Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM), on the Dutch side, is one of the best-connected airports in the Caribbean, with direct flights from Paris, Amsterdam, major US cities, and across the region. For the ultimate arrival, many guests fly into St. Barths and take the 25-minute ferry — a spectacular introduction to the archipelago. Guest accommodation ranges from La Samanna to a collection of excellent boutique hotels and private villa rentals. A Saint-Martin wedding is also an invitation to explore one of the world’s most beautiful archipelagos — and every guest will leave planning their return.

    5

Guest Experience: Two Nations, Thirty-Seven Beaches & Infinite Sunset

Saint-Martin rewards exploration in its own compact way. The island claims 37 beaches, each with a distinct personality: Baie Longue (the longest, the most beautiful, the most exclusive), Baie Rouge (dramatic and secluded), Orient Bay (the Caribbean's most famous clothing-optional beach, with beach bars and water sports), Mullet Bay (a perfect crescent of sand on the Dutch side), and Happy Bay (accessible only by a short hike, often nearly empty). The dual nationality means guests can have a croissant and café au lait for breakfast on the French side, gamble at a casino on the Dutch side after dinner, and not feel any transition. The capital, Marigot, has a charming waterfront market and French boutiques. Philipsburg, on the Dutch side, offers duty-free shopping along its boardwalk. Day trips expand the experience dramatically: Anguilla (Shoal Bay, Meads Bay, Scilly Cay), St. Barths (Gustavia, Shell Beach, the glamour of Eden Rock), and the uninhabited island of Tintamarre are all within easy reach. For adventure, the Loterie Farm in the island’s interior offers zip-lining through the tropical forest and a hidden swimming hole. A Saint-Martin wedding is a masterclass in Caribbean living — sophisticated, relaxed, and endlessly rewarding.

Saint-Martin is the Caribbean for connoisseurs. It lacks the name recognition of St. Barths and the mass tourism infrastructure of the Bahamas, and that is precisely its appeal. It offers the best of the French Caribbean — the food, the wine, the sophistication — combined with Dutch efficiency and Caribbean warmth. Its beaches are world-class. Its restaurant scene is unmatched in the region. And its location at the heart of the Leeward Islands makes it a gateway to one of the most beautiful archipelagos on Earth. For couples who want a wedding that feels sophisticated yet relaxed, intimate yet capable of grandeur, Saint-Martin delivers. Hire magician Thomas de Bernède for your Saint-Martin wedding — and give your guests an experience that captures the magic of the French Caribbean.

    Everything You Need to Know

Outdoor Aspen weddings — whether at the base of the Maroon Bells, on a ranch surrounded by golden aspen groves, or on a terrace overlooking the Elk Mountains — are among the most breathtaking settings for close-up magic. The outdoor environment requires specific considerations: light transitions at sunset, altitude, and mountain weather patterns. I arrive early, adapt to the conditions, and ensure the magic flows as smoothly as the alpine breeze — creating moments of intimate wonder that complement rather than compete with the grandeur of the Rockies.
I perform fluently in English, French, and Spanish. In Aspen, the primary language of performance is English, though I am entirely comfortable switching to French for Francophone guests — which is more common at Aspen weddings than you might expect, given the town's international draw. My goal is that every guest, regardless of their mother tongue or where they have travelled from, feels personally included in the wonder.
I collaborate closely with the top wedding planners active across Aspen, Snowmass, and the Roaring Fork Valley. The Aspen planning community is exceptionally professional, accustomed to working with discerning clients who expect the highest standards. I integrate seamlessly into their meticulously crafted timelines, arriving early for briefings, understanding the logistics of mountain venues, and ensuring the entertainment exceeds expectations at every turn.
Aspen offers two distinct wedding seasons, each with its own magic. Summer — June through September — brings wildflowers, golden aspen light, and outdoor celebrations that flow naturally from terrace to meadow. For summer, the Signature Wedding Experience typically provides ideal coverage. Winter — December through March — offers snow-blanketed landscapes, roaring fires, and the cosy intimacy of a lodge celebration. For winter, I often recommend the Luxury Full Experience, as the indoor-outdoor flow between fire-lit salons, dinner rooms, and terraces benefits from extended coverage. We can tailor the package to your specific vision and venue.
Aspen's high seasons — summer (June through September) and winter holidays (Christmas through New Year) — are extraordinarily busy. For summer dates, especially weekends in July and August, booking 9 to 12 months ahead is recommended. For winter holiday dates, 12 to 18 months' notice is not unusual, as Aspen's festive season is one of the most sought-after in North America. For spring and autumn — the glorious aspen-gold weeks of late September — 6 to 9 months is typically sufficient.
