    Insider's Guide

Your Wedding in Cancún: A Guide to the Mayan Caribbean

Cancún and the Riviera Maya occupy a stretch of the Mexican Caribbean that feels almost designed for weddings. The statistics alone are seductive: 240 days of sunshine per year, an average temperature of 27°C, and a sea that shifts through shades of turquoise that seem digitally enhanced but are entirely real. But this coast offers far more than perfect weather and beautiful beaches. It sits atop one of the richest cultural landscapes in the Americas — the world of the ancient Maya, whose cities, temples, and sacred cenotes (natural sinkholes) are woven into the fabric of the region. Cancún itself, on a barrier island shaped like a number 7, has evolved from a planned resort city into a sophisticated destination that serves every tier of luxury. South of Cancún, the Riviera Maya stretches for 120 kilometers through Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and beyond — an ever-more-glamorous corridor of boutique hotels, beach clubs, and eco-luxury resorts. A wedding here inherits the best of the Caribbean: the warmth of the Mexican spirit, the mystery of the Mayan world, and the hypnotic beauty of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second-largest coral reef system on Earth.

    1

The Cancún Calendar: Eternal Summer in the Mexican Caribbean

Cancún's wedding season is essentially year-round, though it divides into three distinct periods. The peak season (December to April) offers the most reliable weather: temperatures of 24-28°C, low humidity, and virtually no rain. This is the busiest and most expensive period, with Christmas, New Year, and spring break (March) bringing maximum visitor numbers. The shoulder season (May-June and November) offers an excellent compromise: warm weather (26-30°C), lower prices, and fewer crowds. May and June can bring brief afternoon showers, but they pass quickly. The summer and fall (July-October) are the hottest (28-34°C) and most humid, with the highest chance of rain. This is also hurricane season (officially June-November, peaking August-October) — a consideration that demands wedding insurance and venues with indoor backup options. November is the transitional sweet spot: the rains recede, the jungle is lush from the summer, and the high-season prices have not yet kicked in. The region's main cultural events — Day of the Dead (November 1-2) and Carnival (February/March) — can add colorful dimensions to wedding celebrations.

    2

Venues of the Mayan Coast: Resorts, Cenotes & Jungle Palaces

The wedding venue landscape of Cancún and the Riviera Maya is extraordinarily diverse. In Cancún's Hotel Zone, the Ritz-Carlton, JW Marriott, and Nizuc Resort anchor the luxury tier with their manicured beachfronts, grand ballrooms, and world-class service. Nizuc, set on a secluded peninsula, offers a particularly romantic setting with its mangrove-fringed beaches and Asian-inspired design. South along the Riviera Maya, the options multiply. Chablé Maroma, set on one of the coast's most beautiful beaches, combines Mexican craftsmanship with contemporary luxury. Rosewood Mayakoba, built around lagoons in a mangrove forest, offers suites with private plunge pools and boat transfers along winding waterways. The St. Regis Kanai and Edition Kanai, in a new development north of Playa del Carmen, represent the latest in ultra-luxury. For the most uniquely Yucatecan experience, private cenote weddings offer ceremonies and receptions beside (and occasionally inside) these natural limestone sinkholes sacred to the Maya — with dangling vines, crystalline water, and beams of sunlight piercing through jungle canopy. Hacienda-style estates and private beachfront villas round out the options, from the bohemian-chic of Tulum to the polished elegance of Playa del Carmen.

    3

The Yucatecan Table: Mayan Heritage & Contemporary Mexican Cuisine

The cuisine of the Yucatán Peninsula is one of Mexico's great culinary traditions, distinct from the cooking of the interior and a revelation for wedding guests. The ancient Mayan staples — corn, beans, squash, chiles — form the foundation, enriched by Spanish, Caribbean, and Lebanese influences over five centuries. Signature dishes include cochinita pibil (pork marinated in achiote and sour orange, wrapped in banana leaves and pit-roasted), sopa de lima (lime soup with shredded chicken and tortilla strips), and pescado tikin-xic (fish marinated in achiote and grilled). Wedding menus might feature a raw bar of Caribbean ceviche and aguachile, a cochinita pibil station with handmade tortillas, and fresh-caught lobster and snapper. The desserts draw on tropical fruits — mango, papaya, guanábana — and Mexican chocolate in its myriad forms. The bar program should highlight Mexico's extraordinary spirits: mezcal and tequila in tasting flights and craft cocktails, Xtabentún (the Yucatecan anise-honey liqueur), and the excellent Mexican wines from the Valle de Guadalupe. A Mayan Riviera wedding feast is a journey through one of the world's most dynamic and historically rich cuisines.

    4

    The Cancún Multi-Day Celebration

Cancún and the Riviera Maya are built for multi-day wedding celebrations, with the infrastructure of a world-class tourism destination supporting every imaginable activity. A classic structure: Day 1 — welcome fiesta on the beach with margaritas, ceviche, and a mariachi trio, or a sunset catamaran cruise along the coast. Day 2 — the wedding day: late afternoon ceremony on a white-sand beach or beside a cenote, cocktail hour with close-up magic as the Caribbean sun sets, dinner under the stars with the sound of the sea. Day 3 — recovery brunch followed by a choice of adventures: snorkeling the Mesoamerican Reef, exploring the Mayan ruins of Tulum or Chichén Itzá, swimming in cenotes, or simply recovering by the pool. Cancún International Airport (CUN) is one of the best-connected in the Caribbean, with direct flights from most major US and Canadian cities, major European hubs (London, Madrid, Paris, Frankfurt, Amsterdam), and across Latin America. Guest accommodation spans every tier — from the palace hotels of the Hotel Zone to the boutique eco-resorts of Tulum, the all-inclusive luxury of the Riviera Maya, and private villa rentals. A Cancún wedding is also an immersion in one of the world's richest cultural regions — and every guest will leave with a deeper appreciation of Mexico.

    5

Guest Experience: Ruins, Reefs & the Cenote Trail

The Yucatán Peninsula offers an extraordinary density of world-class experiences for wedding guests. The Mayan archaeological sites are the obvious starting point: Tulum, dramatically perched on a cliff above the Caribbean, is 90 minutes south of Cancún; Chichén Itzá, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, is a 2.5-hour drive inland. The lesser-known sites — Cobá (where you can still climb the main pyramid), Ek Balam (with its exquisite stucco friezes), Muyil (in the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve) — offer more intimate encounters with Mayan civilization. The cenotes — thousands of them throughout the peninsula — provide some of the most magical swimming experiences on Earth: crystalline freshwater pools in limestone caverns, some open to the jungle sky, others hidden in caves. The Mesoamerican Reef offers world-class snorkeling and diving. Isla Mujeres (30 minutes by ferry from Cancún) and Isla Holbox (2 hours northwest) provide day-trip escapes to a slower, more bohemian Caribbean. For culture, the colonial cities of Mérida and Valladolid offer architecture, markets, and an authentic Yucatecan pace of life. A Cancún wedding is a gateway to one of the most rewarding travel experiences in the Americas.

Cancún and the Riviera Maya deliver one of the most complete destination wedding packages in the world: perfect weather, extraordinary natural beauty, world-class venues, a rich cultural context, and the infrastructure of a mature tourism destination. But beyond the logistics, there is something genuinely magical about this coast — the way the Caribbean light falls on ancient stones, the mystery of the cenotes, the warmth of the Mexican welcome. For couples who want a wedding that combines tropical paradise with genuine cultural depth, the Mayan Riviera is hard to beat. Hire magician Thomas de Bernède for your Cancún wedding — and give your guests an experience that weaves wonder into the very fabric of the Caribbean.

    Everything You Need to Know

Outdoor Aspen weddings — whether at the base of the Maroon Bells, on a ranch surrounded by golden aspen groves, or on a terrace overlooking the Elk Mountains — are among the most breathtaking settings for close-up magic. The outdoor environment requires specific considerations: light transitions at sunset, altitude, and mountain weather patterns. I arrive early, adapt to the conditions, and ensure the magic flows as smoothly as the alpine breeze — creating moments of intimate wonder that complement rather than compete with the grandeur of the Rockies.
I perform fluently in English, French, and Spanish. In Aspen, the primary language of performance is English, though I am entirely comfortable switching to French for Francophone guests — which is more common at Aspen weddings than you might expect, given the town's international draw. My goal is that every guest, regardless of their mother tongue or where they have travelled from, feels personally included in the wonder.
I collaborate closely with the top wedding planners active across Aspen, Snowmass, and the Roaring Fork Valley. The Aspen planning community is exceptionally professional, accustomed to working with discerning clients who expect the highest standards. I integrate seamlessly into their meticulously crafted timelines, arriving early for briefings, understanding the logistics of mountain venues, and ensuring the entertainment exceeds expectations at every turn.
Aspen offers two distinct wedding seasons, each with its own magic. Summer — June through September — brings wildflowers, golden aspen light, and outdoor celebrations that flow naturally from terrace to meadow. For summer, the Signature Wedding Experience typically provides ideal coverage. Winter — December through March — offers snow-blanketed landscapes, roaring fires, and the cosy intimacy of a lodge celebration. For winter, I often recommend the Luxury Full Experience, as the indoor-outdoor flow between fire-lit salons, dinner rooms, and terraces benefits from extended coverage. We can tailor the package to your specific vision and venue.
Aspen's high seasons — summer (June through September) and winter holidays (Christmas through New Year) — are extraordinarily busy. For summer dates, especially weekends in July and August, booking 9 to 12 months ahead is recommended. For winter holiday dates, 12 to 18 months' notice is not unusual, as Aspen's festive season is one of the most sought-after in North America. For spring and autumn — the glorious aspen-gold weeks of late September — 6 to 9 months is typically sufficient.
