"A wedding aboard a yacht cruising through the Yasawas — it was already the most romantic thing we could imagine. Then Thomas performed his close-up magic as we sailed past volcanic islands at sunset, and it became something legendary. Our guests still talk about 'the magician on the yacht in Fiji' like it was a dream they all shared. Magical. "

    Insider's Guide

Your Wedding in Fiji: A Guide to the South Pacific Paradise

Fiji is not just a tropical island — it is an archipelago of 333 islands scattered across the South Pacific like emeralds on blue silk, a nation where the word "bula" means hello, goodbye, welcome, and love all at once, and where the warmth of the people matches the warmth of the turquoise lagoons they call home. This is the South Pacific at its most seductive: volcanic peaks cloaked in rainforest, coral atolls ringed by white sand, and water so clear you can count the starfish on the ocean floor from twenty metres up. Fiji invented the concept of the private island wedding, and it remains the gold standard — from the ultra-exclusive Laucala Island (owned by Red Bull's Dietrich Mateschitz) to the intimate boutique resorts of the Mamanuca and Yasawa groups, this is a destination that has elevated the castaway fantasy into an art form. Yet beneath the luxury lies a culture of extraordinary depth and generosity — the Fijian wedding ceremony, with its traditional meke dances, kava ceremonies, and warrior welcomes, adds a layer of meaning and authenticity that no European or Caribbean destination can replicate. A Fiji wedding is a celebration not just of two people but of the ancient South Pacific tradition of gathering, feasting, and honouring the bonds that connect us all.

    1

The Fiji Calendar: Dry Season, Wet Season & Cyclone Awareness

Fiji's wedding season is dictated by the tropical climate. The dry season (May-October) is the ideal window: temperatures range from 22-28°C, humidity is low, rainfall is minimal, and the trade winds provide a gentle cooling breeze. July and August are the peak months for international weddings and should be booked well in advance. The wet season (November-April) brings higher temperatures (26-32°C), humidity, and the possibility of tropical cyclones — particularly December through February. While many weddings take place during these months (especially over the Christmas and New Year period), wedding insurance and flexible venue arrangements are strongly recommended. The shoulder months of May and October offer the best combination of good weather, lower prices, and reduced tourist numbers. Note that Fiji operates on 'Fiji Time' — a cultural concept that embraces relaxation and flexibility, which is wonderful for the holiday experience but requires clear communication and confirmed timelines with venues and suppliers for the wedding day itself.

    2

Private Islands & Barefoot Luxury: Fiji's Legendary Wedding Venues

Fiji's venue landscape is defined by the private island experience. Laucala Island, in the northern Lau group, occupies its own category of exclusivity: 3,500 acres of jungle, beach, and organic farmland serving a maximum of 80 guests across 25 villas, with a level of privacy and service that has attracted everyone from royalty to tech billionaires. Kokomo Private Island on Kadavu offers a similarly rarefied experience with its Great Astrolabe Reef location providing world-class diving and snorkelling directly from the beach. The Mamanuca Islands — a chain of volcanic islands just off Nadi — host the majority of Fiji's resort weddings: Six Senses Fiji on Malolo Island, Vomo Island Resort, Tokoriki Island Resort, and Likuliku Lagoon Resort (the first and only overwater bures in Fiji) offer a range of luxury experiences from family-friendly to adults-only. The Yasawa Islands, further north, provide a wilder, more remote experience — dramatic volcanic peaks, secluded coves, and a sense of true escape. For couples wanting convenience without sacrificing beauty, the resorts of Denarau Island and the Coral Coast on Viti Levu's mainland offer luxury venues with easier access from Nadi International Airport. A traditional Fijian wedding ceremony — often included by resorts — typically involves a warrior escort, a kava ceremony, meke dancers, and a Fijian choir, creating a wedding experience that is uniquely and authentically Pacific.

    3

The Fiji Table: Pacific Rim Flavours & Kava Traditions

Fiji's cuisine is a fusion of Melanesian tradition, Indian influence (from the Indo-Fijian community, descendants of sugar plantation workers who arrived in the 19th century), and international luxury resort gastronomy. The core ingredients are the Pacific's finest: yellowfin tuna, wahoo, coconut, taro, cassava, breadfruit, tropical fruits (mango, papaya, pineapple, soursop), and the extraordinary Fijian kokoda — raw fish marinated in citrus and coconut cream, the Pacific answer to ceviche. The Indian influence brings fragrant curries, roti, and dhal to the table, creating a culinary landscape that is unique in the Pacific. The luxury resorts employ world-class chefs who work with these ingredients to create tasting menus that rival any global dining destination. Kava — the traditional drink made from the root of the yaqona plant — plays a central role in Fijian ceremony and is typically incorporated into wedding celebrations as a sign of respect, welcome, and union. For the wedding feast, a lovo — the traditional Fijian underground oven feast — is an unforgettable experience: meats, fish, and root vegetables wrapped in banana leaves and slow-cooked in an earth pit, then unveiled in a ceremony that is as theatrical as it is delicious. Fiji Water and Fiji Rum complete the beverage story, alongside Australian and New Zealand wines that dominate the wine lists.

    4

    The Fiji Multi-Day Celebration

Fiji is perhaps the ultimate multi-day wedding destination because the journey itself is part of the experience. Most guests will fly into Nadi International Airport (NAN), which has direct connections from Los Angeles, San Francisco, Sydney, Auckland, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Tokyo. The flight from LAX is approximately 10 hours — a small price for paradise. A classic structure: Day 1 — arrival and welcome ceremony with Fijian warrior escort and fresh coconut welcome drinks; sunset cocktail at the resort. Day 2 — wedding day: morning relaxation (snorkelling, spa, pool), afternoon ceremony on the beach or overwater chapel, cocktail hour with close-up magic as the sun sets over the Pacific, dinner under the stars with Fijian meke performance. Day 3 — recovery: floating breakfast in the infinity pool, island-hopping by boat or seaplane, sunset cruise with champagne. Day 4 — adventure day: diving the Great Astrolabe Reef, surfing Cloudbreak (for the brave), visiting a traditional Fijian village. Guest accommodation is concentrated within the resorts, creating an intimate, house-party atmosphere that is unique to island weddings. Many couples charter the entire resort or island for ultimate privacy — a Fiji tradition that transforms the wedding into a multi-day celebration with your closest family and friends in your own private paradise.

    5

Guest Experience: Reefs, Rainforest & Fijian Culture

Fiji rewards those who explore beyond the resort. The diving and snorkelling are world-class — the Great Astrolabe Reef (Kadavu), Rainbow Reef (Somosomo Strait), and the soft coral capital of the world (Bligh Water) offer encounters with manta rays, reef sharks, turtles, and thousands of tropical fish. A traditional Fijian village visit is an essential cultural experience — guests are welcomed with a sevusevu (kava ceremony), meet local families, and witness a way of life that has remained largely unchanged for centuries. The Sabeto Hot Springs and Mud Pool near Nadi provide a therapeutic and entertaining half-day excursion. For the adventurous, the Sigatoka River Safari takes guests upriver by jet boat to visit remote Fijian villages in the highlands. A seaplane or helicopter transfer between islands is not just transport but an experience in itself — the aerial views of the Mamanuca and Yasawa island chains are among the most spectacular in the world. On the Coral Coast, the Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park offers archaeological sites and dramatic coastal landscapes. And for the ultimate post-wedding adventure, a short flight to Taveuni — the Garden Island — reveals waterfalls, rare birdlife, and the 180th meridian where you can stand with one foot in today and one in yesterday. A Fiji wedding is not just a celebration — it is the beginning of a South Pacific love affair for every guest who attends.

Fiji is the South Pacific distilled into its purest form: warm water, warm people, and a quality of light that has no equal anywhere on earth. A wedding here is not about impressing with grandeur — though the luxury is certainly present — but about connection: to nature, to each other, to a culture that has been practising the art of welcome for millennia. The private island experience, the coral gardens, the Fijian choirs singing beneath the stars — these are memories that lodge themselves in the soul. For couples who want a wedding that feels like a genuine escape, that removes their guests from the everyday and transports them to a world of turquoise lagoons and sunset ceremonies on white sand beaches, Fiji delivers an experience that no other destination can match. Hire magician Thomas de Bernède for your Fiji wedding — and let the magic of the South Pacific meet the magic of a world-class performer.

    Common Questions

    Everything You Need to Know

Outdoor Aspen weddings — whether at the base of the Maroon Bells, on a ranch surrounded by golden aspen groves, or on a terrace overlooking the Elk Mountains — are among the most breathtaking settings for close-up magic. The outdoor environment requires specific considerations: light transitions at sunset, altitude, and mountain weather patterns. I arrive early, adapt to the conditions, and ensure the magic flows as smoothly as the alpine breeze — creating moments of intimate wonder that complement rather than compete with the grandeur of the Rockies.
I perform fluently in English, French, and Spanish. In Aspen, the primary language of performance is English, though I am entirely comfortable switching to French for Francophone guests — which is more common at Aspen weddings than you might expect, given the town's international draw. My goal is that every guest, regardless of their mother tongue or where they have travelled from, feels personally included in the wonder.
I collaborate closely with the top wedding planners active across Aspen, Snowmass, and the Roaring Fork Valley. The Aspen planning community is exceptionally professional, accustomed to working with discerning clients who expect the highest standards. I integrate seamlessly into their meticulously crafted timelines, arriving early for briefings, understanding the logistics of mountain venues, and ensuring the entertainment exceeds expectations at every turn.
Aspen offers two distinct wedding seasons, each with its own magic. Summer — June through September — brings wildflowers, golden aspen light, and outdoor celebrations that flow naturally from terrace to meadow. For summer, the Signature Wedding Experience typically provides ideal coverage. Winter — December through March — offers snow-blanketed landscapes, roaring fires, and the cosy intimacy of a lodge celebration. For winter, I often recommend the Luxury Full Experience, as the indoor-outdoor flow between fire-lit salons, dinner rooms, and terraces benefits from extended coverage. We can tailor the package to your specific vision and venue.
Aspen's high seasons — summer (June through September) and winter holidays (Christmas through New Year) — are extraordinarily busy. For summer dates, especially weekends in July and August, booking 9 to 12 months ahead is recommended. For winter holiday dates, 12 to 18 months' notice is not unusual, as Aspen's festive season is one of the most sought-after in North America. For spring and autumn — the glorious aspen-gold weeks of late September — 6 to 9 months is typically sufficient.
